The Power of Slowing Down

One of the best parts of my day is walking with my dog, that gentle communion of two friends in the moment, enjoying nature and whatever weather we are faced with.  He tends to set the tone; if he wants to amble, we amble, because he turned 10 recently, and so the slower days may start coming a little more frequently.  To be honest, those moments are also good for me.  I learn a lot from him, showing me how to slow down.

But I know it can feel much harder to slow down in life these days.  For many of us, constantly thinking about what comes next is the default setting. Living on autopilot rather than being present with where we are now.

Just over a year ago, I took a trip to Japan to study mindfulness on a joint programme with Kyoto and Oxford Universities. It was an incredible trip, and I am glad of the opportunity, but it was also a good reminder that wellness often isn’t about doing more; sometimes it is about stripping back to basics, becoming more self-aware and present, then gradually taking small steps to sustainable habits that serve us daily.  The habits that help us let go of the need to rush: a bit of space to pause and notice how we actually feel.

Even a few quiet minutes can make a difference, slowing down to reconnect with our bodies and what we really need.  At Vitaflow, I want to create that space – a place where wellness is not about rushing to implement new regimes or tasks for the to-do list: simply taking a moment.

Moments of contemplation can help us find a better, happier path in life.  Sometimes slowing down is exactly what we need to restore ourselves, to come back with more vitality, clarity, calm and balance.
